My very own curry peach chutney

What I have done since arriving in Rustenburg! - I was saying to my neighbor today, I have done things this year I have never done before I came here. I was referring to food, mainly. Because Tannie Ellen loves to cook and bake, and she is always sharing her goodies with me, and she is teaching me new things all the time! She is one of the greatest blessings I have received this year.

Today we made curry peach chutney. At the weekend I took a spontaneous drive to the Magaliesburg with a friend of mine. We arrived unexpectedly at friends of hers, who own a peach orchard. The gentleman led me through the orchard and said I could pick all the ripe yellow peaches from his trees, and then his wife was kind enough to give me the recipe for a curry peach chutney, delicious with braaivleis, she added.

So off we went, having returned to Rusty a whole lot richer - in adventure, food and fun! - and Tannie Ellen went to work - and put me to work - straight away. We peeled the peaches, cut them into pieces and put them in the fridge. And today, straight after school, I made my first curry peach chutney - bottled & all! I was so proud.

And the thought that came to my mind as I placed the glass containers in my oven was, "Wow! I always think there are these great secrets to life, or these great talents that others have that I will never be able to master, but when you become hands-on with something, you see that there is a way and a time for everything. And I can do this too!"

To sterilise bottles, you just need to wash them out, dry them and place them in the oven at a low heat for about 5-10 minutes. Tannie Ellen told me to cut my plastic Fanta bottle in two, and then we had a funnel. I poured the mixture of onions, curry, tumeric, salt, pepper, cloves, ginger and peaches into the bottles after having cooked them, and there now stand three bottles of delicious home-made curry peach chutney!

I can't wait to give one to my friend who led me to the orchard, and to Tannie Ellen for her great help in all culinary matters, and to try some myself when next I eat braaivleis.
